The Anchorage Youth Symphony, which is comprised of about 100 high school musicians, provides high quality orchestral performance experiences for talented young musicians, and furthers musicianship of members through rehearsals, concerts, education, tours and community involvement.
Organized in 1965, the AYS has not only expanded over the years, but also, has sought to improve the quality of the young musicians it recruits. This, in turn, has allowed the orchestra to play ever more demanding repertoire. In recent years, the orchestra's program has expanded to include coaching by local professional musicians (many of whom were in the Youth Symphony as young players), an annual recording project, a chamber music series, an alumni association, and scholarships. ADN Arts Editor Mike Dunham praised the AYS as "the second best orchestra in Alaska." In 2007, the AYS received the Mayor's Award for Arts for a Youth Program for contributing significantly to the cultural development and quality of life in Anchorage.
The musicians in the Anchorage Youth Symphony are highly accomplished. Current members have won the demanding Music Teachers' National Association Alaska Chapter Award, qualified for the prestigious National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute, and participated in a variety of national and regional groups, including the All Northwest Band and Orchestra. In addition, many, if not most of the AYS members lead their school communities athletically and academically.
Runs approximately 2 hours including intermission.
